Why You Self-Sabotage Right When Things Start Working
May 19, 2026
Here’s something that used to confuse the hell out of me.
Things would finally start working…
Money coming in.
Opportunities landing.
Momentum building.
And then out of nowhere?
Everything would dip.
I’d get tired.
Distracted.
Start questioning things that were just working.
Make weird decisions.
Pull back.
And I used to call it something cute.
“Contraction after expansion.”
Like it was some spiritual law I just had to accept.
It’s not.
It’s homeostasis.
Your body trying to pull you back to what feels normal.
Because when things jump too far, too fast…
Your system doesn’t register it as a success.
It registers it as a threat.
So it starts correcting.
Not loudly.
Not in a way that’s obvious.
Subtly.
You procrastinate.
You overthink.
You suddenly feel “off.”
You stop doing the things that were working.
And it doesn’t feel like sabotage.
It feels like:
“I just need a break.”
“I need to think this through.”
“Something doesn’t feel right.”
But if you zoom out?
The pattern is clear.
Every time you stretch beyond your current baseline…
Something in you pulls you back.
And if you don’t understand that…
You’ll keep thinking you’re inconsistent.
You’ll keep trying to fix it with discipline.
More structure.
More accountability.
More pressure.
But this isn’t a discipline problem.
It’s a regulation problem.
Your system doesn’t know how to stay at the new level yet.
So it defaults.
Back to what it knows.
And this is where people get stuck for years.
They create a big win…
Then lose momentum.
Create another win…
Then drop again.
And they think it’s random.
Or worse—
They think it means they’re not capable of holding it.
That’s not true.
You just haven’t trained your system to recognize that level as safe yet.
So now, when things start going really well?
Pay attention.
Not to what’s happening externally.
But internally.
Do you get restless?
Do you start looking for problems?
Do you feel the urge to change something that’s actually working?
That’s the moment.
That’s the exact moment your system is trying to reset you.
And most people miss it.
They follow the feeling.
They trust the discomfort.
They unconsciously step off the level they just reached.
Not because they want to.
Because it feels more stable.
And this is the shift:
You don’t need to stop expanding.
You need to learn how to stay when things get good.
Because that’s actually the harder part.
Not getting there.
Holding it.
And until you see that pattern clearly…
You’ll keep calling it bad luck.
Bad timing.
Or “just how it goes.”
It’s not.
It’s predictable.
It’s repeatable.
And once you see it…
You can start changing how you respond to it.
Because the next level isn’t about reaching it once.
It’s about not abandoning it the moment your system gets uncomfortable.
That’s where the real shift happens.
