I went to the mall and bumped into a Facebook friend I’ve never met (shout out to Crystal Renee ☺️). She shared the impact that my free classes have had on her.

For me, they happened, they’re done and they disappear from my mind. But it flicked something awake in me: that I can make an impact.

It reminded me of a surprising conversation a few weeks ago. A graduate from the school I studied at for hypnotherapy training (shout out to HMI) told me that I had a stellar reputation at the college. That they still talked about me in class (I had been wondering how so many graduates find their way to my page)

I was SO surprised. It literally never occurred to me.

That reminded me of a conversation I had last time I went to Ruth’s Chris. I had worked there for a very formative year in college as head hostess.

When I mentioned to my server I used to work there, he started and said “Wait, not Abi Derrett? (My maiden name)”. I was shocked 😮

He went on to explain I was a restaurant legend. That the GM (who had been a manager when I worked there) still raved about my abilities to work the restaurant. Throughout the night I saw people I didn’t know whispering about me and looking over with awe. A few of them came over to introduce themselves and say they’d heard about my abilities.

Some servers that weren’t serving our section, came over to check in on us.

The reason I even mention this is because the life I’ve led feels pretty unremarkable. I’m guessing maybe you can relate…

I just teach.

I just went to school.

I just worked a restaurant.

I’ve led a good life. I’ve left a positive impact- I’m satisfied.

And yet… the imprint I’ve left in my wake speaks to a life much bigger than I feel I’ve lived.

So speak. Do the thing. Make the move. Record the video. Release the course. Help the person you want to help. Walk towards the dream.

You may never know the impact you’re leaving (or you may find out 20 years later).
