What You Call Self-Sabotage Might Actually Be Protection
Sep 12, 2026
Your brain may not be trying to ruin your progress. It may be trying to keep you inside what it already knows is safe.
Have you ever wondered why you can want something SO badly...
and still procrastinate?
Hesitate?
Overthink?
Suddenly feel exhausted?
Forget the thing you absolutely needed to do?
Talk yourself out of an opportunity you were excited about yesterday?
This is where people start saying:
*"Why do I keep sabotaging myself?"*
But I want you to understand something.
Your brain isn’t sitting around plotting ways to destroy your life. 😆
It’s trying to protect you.
A huge amount of what runs automatically in your day comes from beliefs and patterns you absorbed when you were young.
From parents.
Caregivers.
Teachers.
Other influential adults.
And when you’re little, you don’t exactly stop and say:
*"Excuse me, is there peer-reviewed evidence for that belief?"*
😂
You absorb it.
Money is hard to make.
You have to work really hard to deserve success.
There’s never enough.
Money changes people.
Successful people are selfish.
Whatever the messages were, your brain can start treating them like truth.
Then homeostasis kicks in.
Homeostasis is your brain’s drive to keep things familiar.
Familiar feels safe.
Even when familiar is frustrating.
Even when familiar is keeping you stuck.
So when you suddenly decide:
*"I want more money."*
*"I want more freedom."*
*"I want a completely different life."*
...your brain may respond with:
Absolutely not, precious. We do not know that neighborhood. 😂
And THAT can look like:
Procrastination.
Overwhelm.
Confusion.
Indecision.
Freezing.
Sudden fear.
Exhaustion.
Overspending.
Remembering every mistake you’ve ever made at exactly the moment you’re about to do something brave.
What we often call self-sabotage may simply be your nervous system trying to return you to what it already recognizes.
Which means beating yourself up usually isn’t very useful.
Awareness is.
Here’s one of my favorite ways to start uncovering what might be running underneath the surface.
Finish these sentences with the FIRST thing that comes to mind:
**I would be more successful, but...**
**I would have more money, but...**
**I would have more freedom, but...**
Don’t edit your answers.
Don’t make them sound reasonable.
Just notice what shows up.
Because those answers may reveal some of the rules your brain has been quietly organizing your life around.
And once you can see the rule...
you can begin deciding whether you still want to live by it.
