Reworking the story that’s pissing you off
I was having a moment today.
We picked the kids up for the beach but we were 30 mins late. They got into the car sullen and quiet, and were short with responses to questions.
My brain went on a rampage!
I created an entire case for myself.
I built a list of how much effort had gone into the day, that they would never see.
I made decisions on what I wasn’t going to help with because of this disrespect and ingratitude….
And then I caught myself.
Wait… had either of them actually expressed ingratitude or disrespect? No.
So why did I feel disrespected?
I followed that thought all the way back to the root:
𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐲’𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞.
The translation I assumed from their demeanors.
I asked myself: do I know they’re even mad?
Let me find out…
I texted my kiddo: Hey, are you guys okay? You seem really quiet.
And my kiddo responded that they were really sleepy 😴 They had just woken up.
🤦🏻♀️ Well that was perfectly innocent.
If I hadn’t caught myself in that loop, it could’ve spoiled the day.
Next time you catch yourself feeling hot about how someone treated you, and just ask yourself:
1 . What do I feel?
2 . Why do I feel that way?
3 . Is that actually true?
4 . What is true? (Ask!)
5 . Reevaluate. With that new information do you still feel #1 or did that dissipate?
