Living with alopecia has its ups and downs

There is so much vulnerability and nakedness to experience, and at times, quiet longing of women who have hair they can whip around on the dance floor

But there’s an experience that is so tender of the moment I told my partner about my alopecia I’d love to share

We were at my house for the first time, where I typically yank my wig off like most women pull off their bras as soon as they walk through the door, and I braced to share it with him.

Me: I have alopecia… so I wear wigs and I’m about to take mine off. *I looked at him*

Him *looking stunned*:….. So?

Me *Assuming he didn’t know what alopecia was, slipped my wig off and looked at him again, waiting for his reaction*

Him *looking confused, like he was genuinely trying to figure out what was going on, he repeated*: So?

Me *Stunned, because I’d never gotten this reaction from a man before*:……. Oh…..

Him *Brow furrowed in sincere confusion*: Did you think I was going to judge you??

Me: I thought you would find me less attractive….

HE LAUGHED, pulled me close and kissed me in a way that demonstrated how very much he was still attracted to me.

I thought he would get tired of being with someone who didn’t have hair.

He hasn’t.

I thought his attraction to me would fade, especially as he saw other stunning women with stunning hair

It didn’t (like, really… 🔥🔥)

And in that moment, that gorgeous human helped me rewrite a pattern that had been running for 8 years prior: That I am less valuable than other women because I don’t have hair 🥰

It’s funny the judgements we carry against ourselves. It’s fascinating to witness people playing into them - unconsciously we will actually magnetize people who reinforce our judgements because our brain needs to be right.

And it is so wonderful that there are humans out there that will prove us so unconditionally wrong 🥰💜
